Know me – BITE ME – follow me …

So it’s Halloween, it’s origins in the ancient festival known as Samhain which is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer’s end".

With this we venerate the dead and other such things.

However, I was in Whitby the other day and something else happened … The Whitby Goth festival.

They venerate the dead to boot, but the interesting thing is the manner in which it comes about.

Firstly lets put Whitby on the map. Whitby, seaside town in the North Yorkshire Moors. Not only that but where Bram Stoker first wrote Dracula and subsequently the rest should be history.

It’s a beautiful fishing harbour/beach on the moors but twice a year it is desended upon by "Victoriana" in it’s finest and those of a "Gothic nature".

Fantastic.

I have never seen a group of well dressed people in my life. Decorum.

Here’s the rub.

Social networks.

Think about it. Whether you subscribe to the Victorian nature of the fascination with "perambulating" or "Death" you have to respect that these people typify a "social network". Moreover, I would suggest that they surpass most "networks" by years. the Whitby Goth Festival has been going now twice a year for over 15 years – longer than the beginning of the web – ish. Quite remarkable.

So when I hear of "business networks" or "social networks" I find it hard to let them gain respect when networks like the one I have seen have been going for a lot longer and with more impact.

And this impact has an effect on the economy too. Whitby, as a by-water, relies on the festival to support it’s economy. And so it should.

I have tremendous respect and regard for those that have seen through the tyranny of ignorance. Most of us on this forum have had to put up with ignorance, and it take strength to see it through. These people have, now whether you subscribe to their dress sense or not you HAVE to respect their faith and drive.

This is what it takes to have a social network.

Social networks can exist on a number of planes, social, business, pleasure etc. But all have one thing in common – Network, and non are more special and rewarding than social ones – even business ones.

From the outside world their fascination with "Death" and "Victoriana" may be "weird" but, with respect, no more weird than Corporate life – from the outside you live a strange existence!

It seems, therefore, that social networks work on all levels and so they should. … and so we should embrace them,

I also expect you all to be at the next Whitby Goth festival, I am – it will do me good.

Happy Halloween.

Regards N

The show must go on … even though I had a blow out at 80 MPH. #thentshow

Thank you to all who tuned into the Nick Tadd show yesterday on twitter, we had an amazing response that went on even after the official end to the show.

The most amazing thing about this form of interview is the fact that it can take place pretty much anywhere. as it turned out yesterday we ha a "stupid o’clock" start to drive up-to Gateshead, half way there, despite getting a blow out at 80 on the M1, the show still went on – albeit in the services!

Being able to "broadcast" from the services on the M1 brought back Thomas’s comments from the Weybridge event on Monday night, that with-in the next ten years most business will be conducted from mobile devices.

Thomas also spoke at length abuot "connetive-ness" and that the more connected you are, the more opportunity that flows towards you. As a result of theNTshow a lovely fellow by the name of Bill Keenlyside (10 years on ecademy) followed us from ecademy – socialmediatribes.co.uk – theNTshow on twitter – then turned up at the event in Gateshead to chat with us in person!!

Some conclusions from yesterday:

1. It felt incredibly liberating to work in such a productive manner as to be able to broadcast my show from a service station while on my way to a speaking engagement. This could never happen in TV.
2. I am already talking to people about sponsoring theNTshow. Groundswell is an increasingly valuable commodity and it seems that others are willing to pay to leverage that.
3. With each broadcast of thNTshow we learn more. – it’s not as easy as you would have thought, but we have/are learned/learning.
4. We now see that Vanessa can take on the role of Producer, similar to TV but none-the-less important. What it takes to produce this is increasingly complex.
5. Social media event coverage will soon become a chargeble commodity/skill.
6. During this broadcast I acquired over 300 new followers!!! – and the chat continued after I officially signed off.
7. It was gratifying to see people in the conversation making connections with each other.
8. Although the Twitter only allows 140ch @thebookwright was able to include massive value in his answers through links.

It was also interesting that we introduced a new section reminiscent of "Desert Island Disks" called "Desert Island Sites" – if you had the web on a desert island, but could only have x3 sites, which ones would you choose and why?

Tom’s from yesterday were interesting:

1. Wikipedia 4 All Human Knowledge
2. Visual Thesaurus 4 All Words
3. Brainy Quotes 4 Inspiration

So onwards and up-wards: Next week we have the lovely @pennypower on the show, looking forward to that.

So tune in Wednesday at 10.30am GMT!
